How to Merge PDFs in the Right Order
Combine documents cleanly, check page order and avoid losing important PDF features.
Merging a few PDFs sounds straightforward until the attachment order is wrong or an important form field disappears. A good workflow starts before you click Merge: identify the documents, check their contents and decide the final sequence.
Prepare the source files
Open each PDF in a viewer and confirm it is the correct version. Use meaningful filenames such as “01-cover.pdf”, “02-report.pdf” and “03-appendix.pdf”. Names help you recognize files, but they do not replace checking the order displayed by the merge tool.
Keep the originals. A merged document is a new working copy, especially if the sources contain annotations, forms or signatures that need to remain intact.
Arrange before merging
- Open OurSolver's merge tool and choose at least two PDFs.
- Review the displayed list from top to bottom.
- Use the up and down buttons to move each file into position.
- Remove any file that should not be included.
- Create the PDF and download the result.
The merger copies all pages from the first file, then all pages from the next, and so on. If file A has two pages and file B has three, the output should contain five pages. Use the reported count as an initial check, then inspect the actual document.
What page copying does not promise
PDFs can contain more than visible pages. Interactive forms, bookmarks, embedded attachments and digital signatures are separate features. OurSolver copies page content and does not promise to preserve those document-level features. A merged copy should not be treated as a replacement for an original signed document.
For a document that must retain a valid digital signature or interactive behavior, use the original authoring workflow and verify the result with appropriate software. A page that looks correct is not proof that every underlying feature survived.
Check the boundaries
After downloading, inspect the first page, last page and the transitions between source documents. Those boundaries are where missing covers, duplicates and order mistakes are easiest to spot. Check rotated pages and mixed page sizes as well; the merger does not normalize all pages to one size.
When a file fails
Password-protected and damaged PDFs are not supported. If you are authorized to do so, export an ordinary unencrypted copy from the application that created it. For large files, try a smaller batch or a desktop browser with more available memory.
Need only a few pages from a source? Use Organize PDF first, save the selection, then merge that copy with the other documents. This keeps the final result focused and makes the page count easier to verify.
Use the free merge pdf tool. Your files stay in your browser.
